Abula Soup

Nigeria Abula Soup (Gbegiri & Ewedu) is a rich, comforting Yoruba classic—smooth, flavourful, and deeply satisfying. It’s made with a hearty blend of Gbegiri (beans soup) and Ewedu (jute leaf soup), traditionally finished with peppery stew (ata) and served with beef and tripe for extra depth.

Typical ingredients

• Gbegiri: peeled beans (brown/black-eyed beans), palm oil, onions, stock, seasoning, salt, pepper

• Ewedu: ewedu/jute leaves, locust beans (iru), crayfish (optional), seasoning, salt

• Ata (pepper stew): tomatoes, red pepper, onions, palm/vegetable oil, spices

• Proteins (optional): beef, tripe (shaki), stockfish, assorted meat

• Thickeners/seasoning: bouillon/stock cubes, spices
